Short on leave

One place properly beats two countries badly

At this length the enemy is transit, and transit is a function of how many places you try to reach.

Rwanda, if gorillas appeal

The only country in this collection where six nights is a complete trip rather than a compressed one, and the reason is entirely geographic: two hours by good road from an international airport to the gorillas, no internal flights, no airstrip transfers, no light-aircraft luggage limit.

A night in Kigali, three at Volcanoes with the trek on the middle day, two at Lake Kivu. That is a whole trip, not a sample of one.

One Kenyan conservancy, if they do not

Five or six nights at a single conservancy camp with a private vehicle, using full-day drives to reach country a shorter stay cannot.

It is the option people undervalue most. You unpack once, the guide knows you by the third morning, and there is no day lost to a transfer — and it is usually cheaper than the two-camp version because there is no internal flight in it.

What a move actually costs at this length

You loseRoughly
The morning drive on departure dayHalf a morning

Call it most of a day. On a six-night trip that is a sixth of it, and the second move takes another.

What we would refuse to build at eight nights

  • Two countries — the flying alone takes a day and a half
  • Three safari camps — two moves, and nowhere gets a second full day
  • Kenya plus Zanzibar with only eight nights, which is two long flights for three beach days
  • Anything with a two-night stay in it, which is one full day

The honest version

If you have eight nights and want to see two countries, we will tell you that the trip you are imagining takes twelve — and then build the best eight-night trip there is, which is a different and genuinely good thing.
